Hey friends!
So I have never understood the pink ribbon campaign.

Don't get me wrong I think bringing awareness to Breast Cancer is important. But I always thought that if the money used to turn everything pink in the month of October was actually used to make a difference fighting cancer we would be better off.

There. I said it.

This month, you see sports teams decked out in pink and companies who have changed their product packaging to include pink ribbons. These companies, whether it's Proctor and Gamble, Clinique, Estée Lauder, to name a few, support the fight for breast cancer by selling their products and the proceeds of their sales goes towards cancer research. Seems like a good idea but...

I shared my initial reason for questioning it but within the last year through research I have discovered a whole new reason. When you dig a little deeper on these companies, you may find that many of their products contain carcinogenic chemicals.

Parabens. Phthalates. Fragrance (many of which are xenoestrogens). Ethoxylated compounds.
Triclosan. SLS. Lead. To name a few.

"Research by Dr. David Sterling, conducted in 1991 and based upon the work of W.E. Morton, suggested that women who work in the home have a 55% higher risk of developing some form of cancer and/or chronic respiratory disease compared to women who work outside of the home." And with about 2,000 new chemicals introduced each year, I can only imagine what this statistic is today.

I just recently discovered that there is a term for these companies that position themselves as leaders in the fight against breast cancer while engaging in practices that may be contributing to the rising rates of the disease. It is called #pinkwashing.
